I don’t mean in terms of influence, I mean in terms of what it says about a candidate. I don’t usually read the Sun-Times, but the Trib endorsed George W. Bush twice. It’s not just that I disagree with their decision…I find endorsing Bush, especially the second time around, unconscionable. I would much rather have an endorsement from a non-profit organization like NOW.

Native son, I just want to make one correction. Fioretti has been endorsed by a number of groups that weren’t “bought and paid for.” I saw he was endorsed by the Chicago chapter of NOW. There were others, too—the list was pretty long, although I didn’t need to see much more than NOW. It certainly carries more weight than the Trib, I think.

Laura Washington was looking for a way to talk about race. If she really thinks Fioretti’s not trying to win the black vote, how does she explain that he keeps harping on how he often he gets out to meet people in the ward? He says he’s been every precinct at least once. I think Washington is trying to make something out of nothing.

I love the “Aldermen can’t do that” argument. Doody used it against Fioretti in terms of taxes. No, Aldermen don’t vote on taxes, and no, they’re not on the Board of Education. But don’t we want someone to be an advocate rather than sit back and tell us things are out of their control? Are you honestly saying you’d rather that aldermanic candidates not have a stance on public education? Sounds like you’re for Haithcock all the way…she seems to be the expert at sitting back and letting someone else (developers, for example) do her job.
